Space barges are heavy cargo vessels with large cargo bays. They often supply planets which are too urbanized to feed themselves. Therefore, space barges are equipped with sublight engines for intra-system travel as well as repulsors for planetary maneuvering. One of the more popular manufacturers of space barges is "Incom Corporation" who also created the famous X-Wing starfighter. They produced the X-series space barges, beginnig with the "X-23 StarWorker" (see WEG supplements "The Star Wars Sourcebook, 2nd Edition" and "Pirates & Privateers") and continiuing the popular X-series with the X-26 StarHaul (see WEG supplements "Planet of the Mists, for 1st Edition" and "Pirates & Privateers"), a space barge with limited defense capacities and a class-4 hyperdrive. But as space barges have only limited speed and lack heavy weaponry and shielding, they often are targets for pirates and privateers.
To compensate this weaknesses a bit, Incom later produced an improved model of the X-series space barges, the "X-29 StarCarry" space barge. The "X-29 StarCarry" has, as the earlier models of the X-series, the typical crew of two pilots and one fifth degree laborer droid. They can also be piloted by one pilot if necessary. The "X-29 StarCarry" has stronger sublight engines and a faster hyperdrive. The Laser Cannon for defense is the same as we can find installed in the "X-26 StarHaul". Another major improvement is the installation of a low-powered shield generator and better hull plating. So the ship is better protected from collisions with other ships or space debris. The shields and the upgraded hull code are also very useful as some systems are no longer as save as they were before the raise of the Rebellion.
