Chief Bast

Bast was stationned aboard the first Death Star. As Bast is a skilled tactician, he there held the position of a tactical advisor for Grand Moff Tarkin. Bast is a capable officer who rarely underestimares an enemy. Therefore he was also responsible for the analysis of battles. His patience and cunning, which he displayed aboard the Death Star, he learned during his years as a youth when he hunted for big game.
Bast was also aware of the possible threat for the Death Star by the Rebel starfighters at the Battle of Yavin. He presumed that the Rebels could really have found a weak point in the construction of the Death Star, which they probably discovered on the stolen plans of the battle station. He then immediately told his superiour, Grand Moff Tarkin, of the threat. But Tarkin didn't share Bast's opinion. So he decided to escape the Death Star himself. He took the Grand Moff's private shuttle and left the Death Star.
This decision saved his life. Bast is one of the few survivors of the Death Star. He later appears as Darth Vader's aide in "The Star Wars Holiday Special".
