Everywhere within the Empire customs controls and patrols are common. To control the vast number of Imperial systems there are of course lots of system patrol craft needed, such as the famous IPV-1 by Sienar Fleet Systems and its predecessor, the older IR-3F. However, it quickly comes clear that there are other models of system patrol craft needed as well, as one manufacturer can't produce fast enough to cover all systems at once. Thus the Empire also uses also patrol craft designed by the Loronar Corporation, such as the well-known X-Q2 Regulator Cruiser (also see "The Far Orbit Project" and "Classic Campaigns").
The ship features, as most inter-system patrol craft, fast sublight engines and a fair amount of weapons to deal with pirates and smugglers. The crew must catch fleeing ships within before they can escape to hyperspace. A superiour maneuverability supports these actions beside the engines. The X-Q1 has furthermore very strong shields to compensate the somewhat weak hull plating. In case a larger pirate ship or has to be captured, the patrol craft has a small boarding party of two squadrons troopers.
